Chinese-Canadian artist and researcher Sougwen Chung comes to Muffatwerk on Friday August 30th, 2024 to open their first solo exhibition in Munich.

Known for their intergenerational robotic system called Drawing Operations Unit Generation_ (D.O.U.G.), the now London-based Chung has made a name as a former MIT Media Lab and Bell Labs Artist-in-Resident, TED Speaker, and was recently selected as one of TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people in A.I.

Curated and produced by the artist’s studio SCILICET, in collaboration with the in-house team at Muffatwerk, Sougwen Chung presents several large scale works in the venue’s main Muffathalle as well as one of their studios. GENESIS is an ongoing research project exploring the evolution of the drawn line and the robotic form. The project begins with a collection of speculative machine constructions inspired by living organisms.

In Muffatwerk’s main Halle, Chung will be showing three large scale new works;

GENESIS: Stage I is composed of a performance process film, produced in collaboration with New York’s Zerospace studio, accompanied by a 3D-printed sculpture showing the digital drawing the artist created in three dimensional space, as well as a number of GENESIS Forms, alongside a bespoke sound score by collaborator Aquarian.

Centrally placed in the space, is Chung’s newest kinetic installation SPECTRAL, composed of robotic system D.O.U.G._4 linked to the artist’s brainwaves, poetically echoing their movement on a transparent canvas.

Furthermore, Sougwen Chung will be premiering the first works of a new series of digital drawings called BODY MACHINE – envisioning the body as a (re)generative system. These abstract process forms are the result of a growing spatial data set, D.O.U.G._6.

Last, when ascending upon Muffatwerk’s staircase, visitors will find the screening of Chung’s Assembly Lines: Expanse [extending] in one of the studios. Documented during a performance with D.O.U.G._5 at Espoo Museum of Modern Art in 2022, followed by the work’s acquisition within its permanent collection, this can be considered the German premiere of the performance film, which has thus far been shown in Espoo, Beijing, London, Dubai, Basel, and Hong Kong.

Sougwen Chung’s GENESIS: Stage I will be on view at Muffatwerk (Munich, Germany) from August 30th until September 5th, entrance is free of cost.
