Totentanz – Morgen ist die Frage
Totentanz - Tomorrow is the question
La Veronal
The Dance of Death, also known as "Danse Macabre", is one of the most iconic motifs of the Middle Ages. Death is often portrayed as a skeletal figure who comes to claim the lives of the living. The Dance with the Death symbolizes a kind of exorcism against fear – a carnivalesque act of vitality in opposition to the inevitable. A way for the living to confront the dead.
Inspired by this tradition, the Barcelona-based group La Veronal in Totentanz – tomorrow is the question, transforms the stage into a dark, dream-like space where myth and reality intertwine and the boundaries between this world and the hereafter are blurred. From rigorously crafted images and movements, the choreographer and director Marcos Morau creates one of his most radical works. Four performers engage in a bizarre ritual. With fragmented gestures, extreme postures and dynamic interactions, they express the emotional spectrum of mortality. Stage, costumes, video, and music merge past and present. Franz Liszt's Totentanz stands just a step away from pulsating techno beats, while the formal language of black romanticism seamlessly blends into the imagery of today’s political landscape. Totentanz – Tomorrow is the Question is a multidisciplinary and immersive work where installation, video art, and live performance come together into a visually haunting and emotionally charged exploration of mortality.
Marcos Morau, named Choreographer of the Year by TANZ magazine in 2023, has had his work regularly staged at international theaters and festivals, including the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris, the Venice Biennale the Festival d’Avignon, Tanz im August in Berlin, Festival RomaEuropa, SIDance Festival in Seoul, Danse Montréal, and Sadler’s Wells in London. Since 2023, Morau has been Artist in Residence at the Staatsballett Berlin. With Totentanz – tomorrow is the question Morau together with his company La Veronal will make his Munich debut as part of the International DANCE Festival Munich.
